Delicious and Refreshing

Time Period: 1905; Reconstruction.

During 1905, cars were in the making and were not accessible. This was also the time of Reconstruction, which was a recovery time after the Civil War had ended in 1865. This ad fits in with the population at the time because it demonstrates relief from the working day. America was prosperous due to the amount of work businessmen and farmers exerted, especially without the use of automobiles.

Demographic:  Upper-class families

This ad was intended for upper-class families who worked long hours during the day. This demographic is shown is the ad with the man in business clothes and the boy in school clothes.

Summary: The print-ad is illustrated in black and white with a young boy and a businessman drinking the beverage at a beverage bar. The man appears to just had come from work; along with the young boy who looks like he just came from school. Coca-Cola is not a morning beverage, so this helps explain why the beverage is being dranken after a work day.

Logos: The man and the young boy’s position appeal to logos by their body posture. The man is wearing a suit and stands tall as he enjoys his drink; the young boy is dressed nicely signaling that he just came from a long school. This is demonstrating that if you drink coke after a long day, you will find relief.

Ethos:  The big bolded words at the bottom appeal to ethos. The words state, “It satisfies the thirsty and helps the weary.” This statement suggests that it is ethical to drink coke if a man is weary from working and trying to support his dependents. The words, "satisfies' and "helps" credits the beverage to be relieving.

Pathos: The smile on the man’s face proves that the sign that states “delicious and refreshing," is true. The man looks pleased, relieved and untroubled from his workday as he drinks. The young boy also looks relaxed after he finished the drink. This sense of contentment appeals to the use of pathos.
